For years, anyone heading to Tulum flew into Cancún and spent close to two hours on the road. Tulum International Airport (TQO) changed that. It sits south of Tulum and puts you a short drive from your hotel — but it's smaller, with fewer flights, and it isn't automatically the better choice. The right airport depends on where you're staying and what the fares look like for your dates.

The short answer

If you're staying in Tulum or further south, check Tulum Airport first — it can save you more than an hour of driving each way. If you're staying in Cancún, Puerto Morelos, or Playa del Carmen, Cancún is usually the better pick, with far more flights and often lower fares.

Why Tulum Airport can be worth it

  • Much shorter ride to your hotel. After a long travel day, cutting the transfer from two hours to under one makes a real difference — especially with kids.
  • A calmer arrival. The terminal is newer and smaller, so immigration and baggage are usually quicker, and there's less of the busy arrivals-hall sales pitch Cancún is known for.
  • Closer to the south. If your trip includes Bacalar, the Sian Ka'an area, or a quieter stretch of coast south of Tulum, TQO gets you much closer.

Why Cancún is still the default for most people

  • More flights, more times, more airlines. Many cities have nonstop flights to Cancún but not to Tulum, and even where both exist, Cancún usually has more departures a day.
  • Often cheaper. More competition generally means lower fares. A meaningful saving per ticket can easily outweigh an extra hour in a transfer, especially for a family.
  • Better for the northern Riviera Maya. For Cancún, Puerto Morelos, or Playa del Carmen, Cancún is closer or about the same distance.

Which airlines fly to Tulum Airport?

Tulum Airport (TQO), officially Felipe Carrillo Puerto International Airport, opened in December 2023 and has a smaller route map than Cancún. Based on published airline schedules, here is the general picture, but routes change often, so check your dates before you plan around them:

  • United States: year-round service from hubs such as Houston, Atlanta, Dallas/Fort Worth and Miami, with some seasonal winter routes.
  • Canada: seasonal winter flights have been announced from cities such as Toronto, Montréal, Québec City and Calgary, starting in late October 2026. Outside that season, most Canadians still fly into Cancún.
  • Mexico: flights from Mexico City and a few other domestic cities.

If your home airport has a nonstop to Cancún but not to Tulum, a connection to reach Tulum can erase the time you would save on the road. That's another reason to compare total travel time, not just the drive.

How to decide for your trip

Search both airports for the same dates and compare the total cost, not just the flight:

  • Add the flight price for everyone traveling.
  • Add the cost of getting to your hotel from each airport — a private transfer from Cancún to Tulum costs more than one from Tulum Airport.
  • Then weigh the time difference. If the totals are close, the shorter transfer usually wins.

Compare flights into Tulum and Cancún for your dates to see what the price difference actually is before you decide.

Getting from the airport to your hotel

At Tulum Airport, there are ADO buses to Tulum town, taxis, shuttles, and private transfers. Walk-up taxis are priced for people who haven't booked anything, and ride-hailing pickups at Mexican airports are unreliable, so booking a transfer before you fly is usually the better value — especially for two or more people heading to the hotel zone.

From Tulum Airport you can also take a rental car from the terminal, or the Tren Maya from the station near the airport, although the train needs a short transfer and has only a few departures. There is no reliable ride-hailing at the airport, so don't count on getting an Uber. If you fly into Cancún instead, we've compared every option for the ride south — ADO bus, Tren Maya, shared shuttles, and private transfers — in our Cancún Airport to the Riviera Maya guide.

Book your ride before you land — a driver meets you at arrivals at either airport, with the price fixed in advance.
