The short answer
- Best value with luggage: the Havaist bus, which drops you at Taksim Square.
- Cheapest: the metro (M11 to Gayrettepe, then M2 to Taksim), but it involves a change and closes around midnight.
- Easiest for families, late arrivals and first-timers: a pre-booked private transfer to your hotel door.
- Time: about 45 to 100 minutes depending on the option and the traffic.
Istanbul Airport (IST) is the city's main international airport, and it sits far north of the center. Taksim, the lively hub around Istiklal Avenue, Galata and Beyoğlu, is a very popular area to stay, but it is a long trip from the airport, roughly 40 to 45 km by road. The good news is that the metro, a direct bus, taxis and private transfers all reach it.

Prices were checked in October 2026. The Turkish lira changes quickly and fares go up often, so confirm current prices close to your trip on the official sites (hava.ist for Havaist and metro.istanbul for the metro).
Havaist bus: the best value for most people
Havaist is the official airport bus company, and it runs a direct service from Istanbul Airport to Taksim Square. Buses leave from the arrivals level under the Havaist signs, and your bags go in the hold. You can buy tickets at the Havaist desk, online or in the app, and you don't need to change anything along the way.
The catch is traffic. At busy times a trip of about 80 minutes can stretch much longer, and the stop is in the square, so you may need a short walk or taxi to a hotel on one of the steep side streets nearby. Buses are less frequent late at night, so check the timetable if you land after midnight.
Metro: cheapest, but expect a change
The M11 line starts at the airport and runs to Gayrettepe, where you change to the M2 line for a few stops to Taksim. It's very cheap, avoids road traffic and is reliable in the daytime. You'll need an İstanbulkart (the city's rechargeable transport card), which you can buy from machines at the airport metro station. Cash isn't accepted at the gates.
With luggage it's harder: you change trains, there are stairs and long corridors at some stations, and rush-hour trains are crowded. The M11 and M2 also stop running around midnight, so the metro isn't an option for late arrivals.
Taxi: easy to find, harder to predict
Taxis wait outside the arrivals hall. All are metered, and the final fare depends on traffic, with bridge or road tolls added. Make sure the meter is running from the start, have your hotel's address written down (ideally in Turkish) and avoid anyone offering a ride inside the terminal.
Private transfer: the least stressful option
With a pre-booked transfer, a driver meets you in the arrivals hall with a name sign, tracks your flight in case of delays and takes you to your hotel for a price agreed in advance. It is often close to a taxi fare for one or two people and cheaper per person for a family or group. In Taksim and Beyoğlu it also solves the "last 200 meters" problem, since many hotels are on narrow, steep or pedestrian streets that are hard to find from a bus stop with a suitcase.

Landing late at night
Many flights land in Istanbul late in the evening or early in the morning. After the metro closes, your choices are a less frequent night bus, a taxi, or a private transfer. If you arrive after about 11 pm, pre-booking a transfer saves you from waiting at the bus stop or relying on the meter after a long flight. For more, see our guide to GetTransfer vs a hotel shuttle.
Which option should you pick?
- Solo or couple, daytime arrival, some luggage: the Havaist bus to Taksim Square.
- Backpack only, tight budget, daytime: the metro.
- Family, group or lots of luggage: a private transfer, priced per vehicle.
- Hotel on a steep or narrow street in Beyoğlu or Galata: a private transfer to the door.
- Landing late at night: a pre-booked private transfer, or a taxi from the official rank.
Get online before you leave the airport. A Türkiye eSIM installed before you fly connects on arrival, so maps, ride apps and messages work from the moment you land.

Frequently asked questions
How far is Taksim from Istanbul Airport?
Roughly 40 to 45 km by road. A taxi or private transfer takes about 45 to 90 minutes depending on traffic, the Havaist bus about 80 to 100 minutes, and the metro about 75 to 90 minutes including the change.
What is the cheapest way to get from Istanbul Airport to Taksim?
The metro. Take the M11 line to Gayrettepe, then change to the M2 line to Taksim. It costs under about 100 lira in total with an İstanbulkart, but it involves a change and stairs with luggage, and it doesn't run all night.
Does the Havaist bus go to Taksim?
Yes. Havaist runs a direct service from Istanbul Airport to Taksim Square with luggage stored underneath. Traffic can add 30 to 60 minutes at busy times, and the stop is in the square, so you may still need a short walk or taxi to a hotel on a side street.
Is there a metro from Istanbul Airport to Taksim?
Yes, in two steps: the M11 from the airport to Gayrettepe, then the M2 from Gayrettepe to Taksim. The M11 and M2 run roughly from early morning until midnight, so they aren't an option for very late arrivals.
How much is a taxi from Istanbul Airport to Taksim?
Taxis are metered, with tolls added, and fares in 2026 are often around 2,000 lira, depending on traffic. Make sure the meter is running from the start and avoid anyone offering a ride inside the terminal. A pre-booked private transfer gives you a fixed price in advance.
What is the best way to get to Taksim if I land late at night?
A pre-booked private transfer is the simplest, because the metro is closed and bus departures are less frequent. A taxi from the official rank also works, but you have to rely on the meter after a long flight.
