Canggu and Uluwatu are Bali's two surf-and-sunset hotspots, and they sit on opposite sides of the airport: Canggu up the west coast, Uluwatu down on the Bukit peninsula. Neither is far on the map, but Bali's roads are narrow and congested, so the drive is often longer than people expect. There is no train, and public transport isn't practical with luggage, so you will arrive by car. The real choice is which kind.

The short answer

For Canggu, a pre-booked private transfer is usually the least stressful, because villas are often down small lanes and the route through Kuta, Seminyak and Kerobokan is slow. For Uluwatu, a private transfer or the official airport taxi both work well, and the drive is shorter if you avoid the late-afternoon rush. Grab and Gojek can be cheaper, with a walk and a wait at the pickup area.

How far is it, really?

CangguAbout 20 kmAbout 45 minutes to 2 hoursKuta, Seminyak, Kerobokan, Berawa, Pererenan
UluwatuAbout 21 kmAbout 45 minutes to 1 hour, longer at sunsetJimbaran intersection, airport bypass

For Canggu, traffic is heaviest around 7 to 9 am, 12 to 2 pm and 4 to 7 pm. If you can, leave the airport before about 2 pm. For Uluwatu, sunset traffic from roughly 4 to 7 pm can nearly double the journey.

Canggu: why pre-booking helps

Canggu is spread across Batu Bolong, Berawa, Pererenan, Seseh and Cemagi, and many villas and guesthouses sit down narrow lanes that are hard to find. A driver who knows the area, and who you can message in advance, saves you wandering around with luggage. Because a transfer is priced per vehicle, it also works out well for a family or group. If you do use Grab, make sure your pin is exact, since half-mile errors in Canggu can mean a long detour through one-way lanes.

Landing late, or going to a villa that's hard to find? Lock in a fixed price for a private transfer from Bali Airport to Canggu or Uluwatu before you fly.

Uluwatu: shorter, but watch the clock

Uluwatu is closer in distance, but the Jimbaran intersection and the airport bypass are famous pinch points. The Bali Mandara toll road can save time depending on your route, so it's worth asking your driver whether it suits you. Cliff-top villas in Uluwatu can also be down steep, narrow roads, so share your exact pin with your driver. If you arrive in the late afternoon, expect the drive to take noticeably longer.

Grab and Gojek: cheaper, with a catch

Both ride-hailing apps work in Bali and are often the cheapest way in. At the airport they can only pick up from designated areas outside the terminal, not directly at arrivals, so you'll walk with your bags and may wait longer when several flights land together. You also need mobile data the moment you land. An eSIM installed before you fly connects on arrival; our guide covers Bali airport SIM vs eSIM.

Get data working before you land. Set up an Indonesia eSIM so ride-hailing apps, maps and messaging work as soon as you reach Bali.

Which option should you pick?

  • Canggu, late arrival or hard-to-find villa: a pre-booked private transfer.
  • Uluwatu, daytime, light bags: Grab or Gojek, or the official taxi.
  • Family, group, or surfboards: a private transfer, priced per vehicle.
  • Sunset arrival to Uluwatu: pre-book, and expect extra time.
  • Moving between Canggu and Uluwatu later: arrange a driver; it's a long cross-island drive.

Before you land

  • Entry requirements. Check Indonesia's current visa rules for your passport, and note that Bali charges international visitors a tourist levy that you can pay online before you travel.
  • Exact address and map pin. Save it offline, and message your host or driver.
  • Small rupiah notes. Not every driver accepts cards.

Frequently asked questions

How far is Canggu from Bali airport?

Canggu is roughly 20 km from Ngurah Rai Airport (DPS), but the drive takes about 45 minutes to over 2 hours depending on traffic and which part of Canggu you are staying in. Berawa, Pererenan and Cemagi can add another 15 to 30 minutes.

How long does it take to get from Bali airport to Uluwatu?

About 21 km, which is roughly 45 minutes to 1 hour in good conditions. Traffic around the Jimbaran intersection and the airport bypass, especially from about 4 to 7 pm, can nearly double that.

Is Grab allowed at Bali airport?

Grab and Gojek can be used, but pickups are only allowed at designated areas outside the terminal, not at the arrivals kerb. Expect a short walk with your bags and a longer wait when several flights land together.

How much is a taxi from Bali airport to Canggu or Uluwatu?

Official airport taxis charge fixed fares by zone, and pre-booked private transfers are often similar or cheaper, roughly in the region of US$35 to 45 per vehicle to either area at the time of writing. Prices change, so check the current fare before you travel.

Is it better to pre-book a transfer to Canggu or Uluwatu?

Often yes, especially if you land late, travel with kids or surfboards, or are going to a villa down a small lane. A pre-booked driver meets you at arrivals, the price is agreed in advance, and you avoid the walk to the ride-hailing area.

Can I take a scooter from the airport?

Not realistically with luggage, and scooters can't use the Bali Mandara toll road without an e-money card. Most visitors take a car from the airport and rent a scooter later if they are comfortable and properly licensed.
