Chichén Itzá is one of Mexico's most visited ruins and a classic day trip from Cancún. It's about 2.5 to 3 hours each way, so how you go matters: a group tour is simple but arrives with the crowds, a rental car or private driver gives you flexibility, and the bus is cheapest. Here's how to choose.

The short answer

For a first visit with no car, a group tour is the easiest. For an early start, fewer crowds and extra stops like a cenote, a rental car or a private transfer is better. The ADO bus is the cheapest if you're comfortable with a fixed schedule. Whichever you choose, aim to arrive at opening or late in the day, and bring water and sun protection.

Entry fee and hours

Sources put adult entry for foreign visitors at roughly 600 to 650 pesos, split between a state fee and a federal fee, and fees have risen in recent seasons. The site is usually open from 8 am to 5 pm, with last entry around 4 pm, and children under 13 are generally free. Confirm both before you go. Tours often include the ticket, but check the inclusions.

Beating the crowds and the heat

  • Arrive at opening (around 8 am) or in the last couple of hours before closing. Tour buses from Cancún usually reach the site around 10 to 11 am.
  • There is little shade. Bring a hat, sunscreen, at least 1.5 to 2 litres of water and closed-toe shoes.
  • You can't climb El Castillo, the main pyramid, but you can view it from the base.
  • Use only the official entrance, and be wary of unofficial guides or vendors near the gate.
  • Bring cash in pesos for small purchases, parking and tips.

If you drive yourself

The drive uses the toll highway, so budget for tolls (roughly 800 to 900 pesos round trip according to one guide), fuel and parking. Pick up early, check the insurance terms, and take photos of the car before you leave. Compare local rental companies and what insurance each includes.

If you want a driver

A private driver picks you up at your hotel, lets you leave early, and can add stops such as a cenote or the town of Valladolid. Priced per vehicle, it can work out well for a family or small group. Agree the hours, stops and what is included before you go.

  • Want fewer crowds and extra stops: a private driver or rental car.
  • Tight budget: the ADO bus.
  • Family with kids: a private transfer, so you control the pace.
